The Devil's Playground

I’m thinking of setting up a subscription service. The kind of thing where people pay $10 a month for me to email them erotica. Well, mostly erotica, sometimes with additional nonerotic photos or short stories or music or drawings (the sort of things that end up in this blog). Where by “erotica” I mean short fiction and poetry, possibly with illustrations of some manner. At present I’m just testing the waters, finding out if there’s any interest. It’s only a good idea if there’s a market.

This month I have sent off two short stories (nonporn) to pro markets and one (nonporn) to a semi-pro market. The latter was a resubmit, after I sent it off months ago and it was lost. I mostly avoid subpro markets for this and many other reasons. My biggest reason, though, is that they’re mostly a waste of time. If your work is good enough for a pro market, even if no one has ever heard of you, it will get accepted, and if it’s not then you won’t get any better by settling for less, so don’t waste your energy on subpro markets. There are a very, very few semi-pro markets that count as decent publishing credits, but I could count them on one hand with room to spare. If the big markets knock you back, write something better, don’t just sell your inadequate work to an inferior market and think that counts as a publishing credit, because you do yourself all kinds of disservice that way.

Experimenting with camera settings and compositional elements.

The Falling Dream - Caduceus (rough vox) mp3 3.1mb

I did some vox for Caduceus today. This is a rough take, I need to tweak the timing and play with the mix, but here it is. My producer says it’s like a slightly too small pair of underpants; uncomfortable in all the right places. Since the last artist I heard described in those terms was Ego Plum, I am pretty chuffed ;)

Vegan flapjacks!

*it’s vegan if the cat donates it willingly

**Rinse the back of the spoon with cold water to make it easier to smooth out the top of the flapjack mix

This is the version I put on Rapidshare, the one after resequencing and mixing, not the wall of noise and beats I uploaded first.

Rethinking the definition of work (some more… again)

The last few days I haven’t done my daily list, and I don’t think I will resume it. For one thing, it was turning into a chore I hated, for another thing it provides and incomplete and unbalanced picture of my activities.

I found myself highlighting certain tasks and devaluing others, for example mentioning fang making but not housework. Well yes, I know everyone does housework and it just has to be done, but it is such an essential job that is largely unpaid and unrecognised. The point of this blog is to document how much stuff I do, not just how much stuff I do that is reasonably easily recognised as economically viable.

So there’s a change of format coming, I’m just not sure what form it will take.

This is the version after resequencing and mixing, not the wall of noise and beats I uploaded earlier. Tumblr only lets you upload one track per day. I tried to tell them remixes don’t count but they’re not convinced.
